Abstract: | Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) are widely used in various industrial and commercial applications, but little is known about their potential hazard in freshwater ciliate. In this study we investigated the effects of CuO-NPs in an alternative model Paramecium sp. which is perfectly adapted with toxicological studies. Paramecium cells were exposed in triplicate to control, 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg CuO L-1, and the growth kinetics was followed for 120 hours, enzymatic activities of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione-S-Transferase (GST) and Glutathione content (GSH) were investigated to evaluate antioxidative response to copper oxide nanoparticles. Our results showed a dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth, on another hand, the monitoring of biomarkers revealed induction of SOD, CAT, and GST activities, in parallel a significant decrease on GSH content compared to control. |
